East Riding Council Chief Executive Caroline Lacey told Cabinet members vacancies had remained unfilled for some time which had also been seen in authorities elsewhere. Council Leader Cllr Jonathan Owen also warned very careful spending on services was the order of the day after a report warned of a looming £40m budget black hole.

A school in East Yorkshire has dealt with 12 student suicide attempts since September as pupils and teachers struggle with a surge in mental health issues. East Riding councillors heard Hornsea Secondary School had seen a disturbing rise in pupils self-harming and with eating disorders, as well as children dealing with domestic violence and drug or alcohol abuse at home. Headteacher Steve Ostler said safeguarding cases had more than doubled since the coronavirus pandemic with 265 cases being dealt with since the school year started just two months ago.

Hull Daily Mail - East Riding Council 'insensitively' delaying family's Christmas outing with abuse questioning among upheld Ombudsman complaints

East Riding Council paid out £1,200 to a family over the handling of a child abuse investigation, including delaying their Christmas outing with questioning, a yearly report has shown.

The complaint, which also involved a meeting arranged between the complainant's wife and her abusive ex-partner, was among 15 upheld by the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman from 2021-22. Other complaints included refusing a man an allowance to care for his sister and failing to accept a homelessness application to rehouse a woman with urgent medical and welfare needs.

"Bullying from senior officers and decisions being taken outside the democratic process are among the findings of a draft report on the inner workings of East Riding Council seen on Wednesday.

The draft Local Government Association (LGA) Corporate Peer Challenge report found the balance of power in East Riding Council's senior leadership tilted towards officers, rather than elected members."
